Suncoast Credit Union awards $10K grant to The Music Foundation of Southwest Florida
Local nonprofit recognized for getting instruments into the hands of Lee County fifth graders
The Music Foundation of Southwest Florida is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $10,000 grant by the Suncoast Federal Credit Union. The grant makes it possible for the nonprofit to replace worn out instruments that have served approximately 4,000 students per year for several years through the Fifth Grade Travelling Instrument Program.
For over twenty five years The Music Foundation of Southwest Florida has been sending sets of musical instruments to fifth graders in the Lee County Public School elementary schools. Through this program, students are able to have hands-on introductory experiences with band and orchestra instruments under the direction of their music teachers. The purpose of this experience is to build interest and motivation for students to be part of a band or orchestra in middle school and perhaps develop a life-long interest in playing.
In addition to the Fifth Grade Travelling Instrument Program, The Music Foundation of Southwest Florida has brought music programs to the young people of Southwest Florida through programs such as the Double Reed Festival, Summer Music Camps and various scholarships and grants. Each year the Music Festival awards approximately $10,000 to $15,000 to deserving music students from Southwest Florida.
Ruth Christman, executive director of The Music Foundation of Southwest Florida, said, “We are so proud that this year we were able to give out over $6,500 for scholarships to high school students for music summer camp programs around the country. This is the largest amount we have given in any year. Our work does not stop with this, though. We are now preparing for summer music and arts camp for middle schoolers.”
