Valerie’s House to Hold Open House for Children of Fallen Heroes
Grief Center to serve children who have lost military, first responder parents
Valerie’s House, a non-profit dedicated to helping children grieve the loss of a loved one, in conjunction with the United States Army Survivor Outreach Services, will host an open house for families of military service members grieving the loss of their fallen hero on Sunday, Sept. 17 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The event, held at the Valerie’s House Fort Myers location, 1618 Avalon Place, will introduce families to grief support services offered at no cost for children who have had a family member die while serving in any branch of the service, including National Guard and Reserve. Law enforcement families who have suffered loss are encouraged to attend.
“There is a tremendous need for outreach to children in Southwest Florida who have lost a parent or sibling in the military and law enforcement,” said Valerie’s House Founder and CEO, Angela Melvin. “We understand the importance for those families to connect with one another and are looking forward to helping them find comfort in our program.”
In addition to taking a tour and learning about Valerie's House, families will also meet with representatives from American Gold Star Spouses, Inc., American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., the VA Center of Fort Myers, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), and US Army Survivor Outreach Services for SW Florida.
An estimated 300 Survivors have relocated in Southwest Florida between Sarasota and Naples after a family member died on active duty, according to the United States Army Survivor Outreach Services. Florida is second only behind North Carolina with the number of “Survivors” – family members of Fallen Service Members in the nation.
